Arguably, the 'Cantigas de Santa Maria' is the finest medieval collection of music.
These miracle stories of the Blessed Virgin Mary were collected by order of King
Alphonse X (The Wise) (1221-1284), probably in imitation of the famous 13th
century collection of Marian miracle stories 'Miracles de Notre Dame' by
Gautier de Coincy ( 1177-1236).

How does a medieval organ sound? The special sound of it which can be described as
mild and a bit throaty is the result of a quite extraordinary way of pipemaking.

Between the 10th and 15th centuries a rich Maria repertoire develops, intended
for a variety of occasions: Church, festivals in honour Mary, religious plays,
processions, pilgrimages, and of devotional music, performed by professional
musicians (minstrels) for an evening's entertainment at court.

The troubadours were first and foremost concerned with language, with langue d'oc. The performers are professional musicians: the jongleurs. The singing is supported by improvised preludes, interludes and postludes.
