Troubadour and Jongleur - music from Occitania (12th century)

A cd with 12th and 13th century music from northern France. This vocal and instrumental music was originally improvised by poets/musicians (trouvères) Adam de la Halle, 1230-1288 and instrumentalists (jongleurs) and subsequently noted down in collections like the Montpellier Codex. It was performed not only for the higher circles of Parisian society, but probably also for country audiences. The repertoire contains both homophonic and polyphonic music, and both secular and religious texts. The unwritten improvisatory practice is apparent in the 12th and 13th century vocal music; during this period there was a noticeable interchange between worldly music and church music.
